New Mills is one mile downhill from Shaw Farm. It is a steep climb so takes 30 - 45 minutes to walk.
Our local town one mile away has two supermarkets, number of banks with cash machines, good range of small shops including an excellent Bread Shop, butchers, cafes, restaurants, take away outlets, pubs, Cycle repair Shop and swimming pool and leisure centre.
Information about the area can be found in the Heritage and Information Centre. Plays can be seen at the Art Theatre. Emergency facilities include Sett Valley Medical Centre and Grove Veterinary Hospital.
The Midshires Way passes through the centre of New Mills via the Torrs Riverside Park. The Torrs is a dramatic sandstone gorge running through the centre of New Mills. It is the site of old cotton Mills and weirs which can be seen up close from The Millennium Walkway built above the Goyt river. This 4.5 mile Walk through New Mills will lead you through the Torrs next to Goytside Meadows Nature reserve and back via the Peak Forest Canal.
Also in the Torrs is a community owned Hydro Scheme generating renewable electricity from the river which is well worth a look.
The Sett Valley Trail provides a traffic free route of three miles for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between New Mills and Hayfield. Cycle hire is available from Peak Tours who will deliver cycles anywhere in the Peak District.
The Peak Forest Canal passes through the town and provides a lovely walk along the towpath. Much of the district is rural in character with large areas still devoted to agriculture.
You are also able to explore the Peak Forest Canal by narrowboat, available from New Mills Marina.
Marple is a larger town 10 minutes drive from New Mills and has a number of shops including a great traditional cinema which shows up to date films but still includes an interval for ice cream! The Regent Cinema is located here.
Marple also has a good Indoor climbing wall suitable for most abilities located here.
