Details about Shaw Farm, New Mills and the Area |
|||||||||||
We are situated in open countryside on the edge of the Peak District National Park. A short walk to the top of our farm at 1073ft, (327m) affords spectacular views, eastwards towards Kinder Scout and the Peak District. To the west, the Cheshire plains stretch out to the northern Welsh hills on the horizon, over which there are stunning sunsets. A five minute walk by a small wooded valley takes you to the local pub, The Fox Inn, in Brook Bottom (welcomes children and serves food) and also connects with the Goyt way as it goes through Strines wood. There are many footpaths which cross our land for exploring, whilst quiet lanes and bridleways make for good bike, and horse riding. We can provide a stable if you wish to bring your own horse, and have facilities for washing off and storing bikes, plus a box outside each caravan for muddy boots. New MillsOur local town one mile away has two supermarkets, number of banks with cash machines, good range of small shops, cafes, restaurants, take away outlets, pubs, a heritage/information centre, swimming pool, leisure centre, art theatre, doctor’s surgery and veterinary hospital, plus two train stations and good bus links. The Midshires Way passes through the centre of the town through the Torrs Park. The Torrs is a dramatic sandstone gorge with a Millennium Walkway build over the river which is well worth a look as it gives a great view of the old cotton mills and weirs. Soon a hydro electric scheme will be built to generate electricity from the river (see environmental commitment). The Goyt Way is a nine mile riverside walk between Whaley Bridge and Compstall which also passes through the Torrs. The Sett Valley Trail provides a traffic free route of three miles for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between New Mills and Hayfield. Cycle hire is available from Peak Tours who will deliver cycles anywhere in the Peak District. See peak-tours.com for more details. The Peak Forest Canal passes through the town and provides a lovely walk along the towpath. Much of the district is rural in character with large areas still devoted to agriculture. The Regent Cinema in Marple (10 minute drive away) is an attractive and traditional building screening most main stream films.. The High Peak and Surrounding AreaOur district known as the High Peak is at the crossroads for touring Derbyshire and the Peak District, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Manchester, with its art galleries and ‘Last of The Summer Wine’ country (Holmfirth). The scenic spa town of Buxton is only eight miles away which has many attractions including the opera house which hosts many famous acts year round. The Peak District was the first National Park created in Britain. We are situated near the north of this area called the ‘Dark Peak’ with its characteristic rugged moorland and gritstone outcrops offering hill walking for a range of abilities and fantastic rock climbing. The highest of these peaks is Kinder Scout, 3 miles from the farm it has a huge peat plateau at its summit which drains into Kinder Downfall. When the wind is in the right direction a spectacular "upfall" is created! Further south the ‘White Peak’ is famous for its attractive rolling limestone hills and dales. There are many disused railway lines and trails where bikes can be hired, you can stroll along babbling streams rich with wildlife. Visitor attractions worth seeing include the impressive Chatsworth’s House, the Blue John caves at Castleton and of course numerous villages and pubs offering excellent locally produced food and fine ales. In some areas over the millenium water has eroded the limestone and created vast networks of caverns providing some of the finest caving and potholing in the country for the more adventurous. To the southwest the Staffordshire Moorlands also has scenic countryside plus offers a serious adrenalin rush at the world famous theme park Alton Towers (just over an hours drive away). For a detailed list of all the attractions within 10 miles of Shaw Farm please use this link to the Visit Peak District Website - AttractionsThey also have a detailed list of events happening in the area which you can browse through or search - List of events. Thanks to the good rail links in New Mills Manchester is only a half hour train journey away and offers a wide range of activities including great shopping, museums, art galleries, excellent cinemas, a wide range of gastro pubs and restaurants, a thriving music scene and nightlife to suit all tastes. There is a metro service which covers a large area of Manchester and is free with a valid train ticket. If shopping is your thing then the Trafford Shopping Centre can also be easily reached by car which offers a great day out whatever the weather. Going in the opposite direction Sheffield is also only an hour away by train direct from New Mills Central. |
